The earliest recorded knickers were created in 3000BC by a Babylonian girl who knotted cloth between her legs. Yet it was not until the 1800’s that knicker-wearing became the norm and even the modern brief was many years away.

The first crotchless knickers were sported by the Victorians who wore enormous knee-length shorts that tied together at the waist, leaving things quite breezy below! It was the Parisian Can-Can dancers of the 1930’s who first stitched up their seams and chopped their bloomers to reveal their high-kicking legs, thus creating knickers as we know them today. These were sensational in their day, but they were nothing compared to the knicker explosion that has erupted in designer and high-street lingerie in the past few years.
